Richard S. Scolaro was a founding Shareholder of the Firm. Dick's practice areas focused on trust law, estate planning, business successions, federal taxation, state taxation, corporate law, partnership law, limited liability company law, mergers and acquisitions.
Dick attended Syracuse University, where he received a B.A. in 1959 and a J.D. in 1962. He also attended New York University, where he received an LL.M. in Federal Taxation and Estate Planning in 1963. Dick was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1962, the U.S. District Court, Northern District of New York and the United States Tax Court in 1963. He is also a member of the Pennsylvania State Bar.
Dick served as an Adjunct Professor at the Syracuse University College of Law from 1975 to 1980. He also served as Staff Counsel from 1964 to 1967, Counsel from 1967 to 1969 and Executive Director from 1969 to 1974, to the Joint Legislative Committee on Reapportionment. In 1967, Dick was Minority Counsel to the Education Committee for the New York State Constitutional Convention. He was Special Counsel to the Speaker of the Assembly from 1972 to 1974, Counsel, Minority Leader from 1975 to 1990, Special Counsel to the Advisory Committee, U.S. Bureau of Census from 1974 to 1976, and Counsel to the New York State Sports Authority from 1974 to 1975.
Dick is a former member of the Board of Trustees of the Syracuse University Tax Institute, and he has served as a member of the Board of Directors of The Cultural Resources Council, the Syracuse Symphony, the Central New York Community Foundation, Inc., the American Red Cross and the Cerebral Palsy Association (ENABLE).
He presently serves on the Board of Directors for the Cayuga Community College Foundation, the Board of Trustees for Cazenovia College, the Peter Whitcher Scholarship Foundation, the Howard L. Green Foundation, the Frances C. Knight Charitable Foundation, and the Albert C. & Frances C. Knight Educational Foundation. He is a member of the Finance Committee and a Fellow of The Culinary Institute of America. Dick is a frequent speaker and Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. Dick is also a member of the AALU.
He has spoken on behalf of the New York State Bankers' Association, the New York State Bar Association, the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants, the New Jersey Estate Planning Council, the Foundation for Accounting Education (FAE), the Syracuse University Tax Institute, the Estate Planning Council of Central New York, Certified Life Underwriters, the American College of Trust and Advanced Life Underwriting, the Association for Advanced Life Underwriting, Million Dollar Round Table as well as various other tax institutes and business associations. Dick is also the author of numerous outlines and articles on the subject of estate planning and federal taxation and was also an instructor at the Syracuse University Tax Institute.
Dick is in Who's Who In American Law (Succession, Taxation and Estate Planning) and in The Best Lawyers in America (Succession, Taxation and Estate Planning). He has been named to the 2009 Edition of "New York Area's Top Lawyers" and was recently elected to the Upstate Medical University Foundation Board of Directors.
